The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) will back Opposition nominee Justice B. Sudershan Reddy in the upcoming Vice Presidential elections, party chief Asaduddin Owaisi announced on Saturday.
Owaisi said Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy had personally requested his support for the Opposition’s candidate. “@TelanganaCMO spoke to me today and requested that we support Justice Sudershan Reddy as Vice President. @aimim_national will extend its support to Justice Reddy, a fellow Hyderabadi and a respected jurist. I also spoke to Justice Reddy and expressed our best wishes to him,” Owaisi posted on X.
Justice Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, has been fielded by the Opposition against NDA’s candidate CP Radhakrishnan. The election is scheduled for September 9, with results to be declared the same day.
Several Opposition parties, including RJD, NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), Samajwadi Party, DMK, Shiv Sena (UBT), Aam Aadmi Party, and Trinamool Congress, have already pledged their support.
RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, while endorsing Justice Reddy earlier, said, “He is not associated with any political party. I have full faith that he will protect the Constitution and democracy, and run the Rajya Sabha more effectively. The current times demand such a leader.”
Justice B. Sudershan Reddy, a distinguished jurist, served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2007, where he served until his retirement in July 2011. He earlier held roles as Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government, Legal Adviser to Osmania University, and Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court from 1995.
